Altrincham is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester, England.

Situated within the historic county boundaries of Cheshire, Altrincham lies approximately 13 km. (8 miles) south-west of Manchester City Centre.

Altrincham is a suburb of Manchester situated on the south-western edge of the Greater Manchester conurbation located at 53°23′2″N, 2°21′17″W (53.3838, -2.3547).

Altrincham lies in the north-west corner of the Cheshire Plain just south of the River Mersey.

Altrincham was granted its Royal Charter as a Free Borough, to authorise the holding of a market by Baron Hamon de Massey in 1290.

Altrincham's population was recorded in the 2001 Census as 40,695.

Altrincham is now mainly residential. The historic market town developed as a residential area in the 19th century and has its Old Market Place and a new pedestrianised shopping centre.

Altrincham railway station is the Southern terminus of one of the lines of the Manchester Metrolink light rail (tram) system.

National Rail services link Altrincham with Chester via Northwich and Manchester via Stockport.

Manchester International airport is located 6 km. (4 miles) to the south-east of Altrincham.
