With a population of about 300,000 across an area of 77 square miles (200 sq km), Wigan is one of the largest metropolitan districts in England.
The borough of Wigan is based around the two main towns of Wigan and Leigh, and several smaller towns and villages of the former Lancashire coalfield.
Wigan is the most westerly district of the county of Greater Manchester, although many local people (and the Royal Mail) prefer to consider the area part of Lancashire.
Wigan is a surprising mixture of character, history, heritage and transition. Situated approximately halfway between Manchester and Liverpool , the town has a vibrant mixture of fantastic amenities including great shopping facilities, a vast array of pubs, clubs and restaurants, accommodation, plus tranquil countryside and lakes, and award-winning attractions.
