Meridian Offset

gmt globe

International time uses hour offsets from the prime meridian. Each offset is separated by 15 degrees of latitude.

Correct City Times

Time zones however are determined by government jurisdiction rather than strictly by longitude. Some regions also abide by Daylight Saving Time (DST) rules. To find DST-corrected, current offset in a city, use the comparison Place Search.

Going West or East?

Offsets are positive as you travel Eastward, and negative as you travel Westward on either side of the Prime Meridian, that runs through Greenwich, London, UK.

The Original Time Standard

Greenwich is home of the first world time standard, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was officially superceded by UTC (Universal Coordinated Time) in 1972.

Natural Time vs Mechanical Accuracy

GMT is based on mean solar time observation, UTC is based on International Atomic Time. This means that UTC must be rectified at intervals to keep within two seconds of GMT, since the rotation of Earth is not perfectly constant. As Nature is the ultimate governor of Earth time there will always be a role for GMT.
