If time were an accountant, its favourite object would be a calendar, as keeping count of when things happen is one of its functions.
This is demonstrated by the very origins of the word, going back all the way to ancient Greek and Roman times (see for example the Collins Dictionary or the Online Etymology Dictionary.
Calendars have continually being altered and corrected and sometimes completely redefined.
